Three boats post their top times of the weekend on Sunday
CLEMSON, S.C. – The Syracuse University women's rowing team wrapped up competition at the Clemson Invite on Sunday morning. Syracuse competed in five races on its final day on Lake Hartwell, the site of the 2015 Atlantic Coast Championships.
"I am very proud of the women," head coach Justin Moore stated. "Yesterday, we were having dinner in the hotel at 9 p.m. after finishing on the race course at 8 p.m. We were up at 5 a.m. and back on the race course at 7:30 a.m. That's a tough turnaround and they did a great job."
The first varsity four boat continued to be the standout crew for the Orange. Syracuse placed second in its heat with a time of 7:26.8, which was the sixth-fastest time among the 20 first varsity four boats on Sunday. The Orange defeated the likes of No. 12 Indiana and No. 19 Gonzaga in its heat, as well.
"The first varsity four was the, relative to the other crews, top performer," added Moore. "They finished with the sixth-best time today. Those guys were really, really consistently good. They are really young and raw as racers. They were able to display their guts. They raced, every single one of the races, fearlessly. They put themselves in a position to be successful. I am so excited for their development."
Syracuse continued to improve in the first varsity eight, putting up its best time of the weekend by covering the course in 6:33.5. The Orange finished third in its heat, defeating Gonzaga by 1.8 seconds. In addition, the crew had the sixth-best time of the 21 teams racing in the first varsity eight competition on Sunday.
"This was for our first varsity eight our first set of 2K races," commented Moore. "Saturday was our first 2K race this year, due to uncontrollable weather circumstances. I think it was evident the learning that was taking place and our progress made throughout the weekend was a really good indicator of the speed that we are capable of producing. Today, they showed the growth they made this weekend. We feel really positive about the way we progressed in racing over the weekend."
The third varsity eight boat put up its best time of the Clemson Invite, finishing in 6:48.6. Syracuse was the top crew in its heat and had the fifth-fastest time among the 16 teams competing in Sunday's third varsity eight.
The second varsity eight and second varsity four boats each finished in third place in their heats on Sunday morning. Similar to the first and third varsity eight crews, the second varsity four recorded its best time on Lake Hartwell on Sunday, finishing in 7:33.9.
Syracuse will conclude its regular season next weekend when it races at No. 1 Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio. The Orange will take on Ohio State, No. 11 Michigan, and Michigan State on Saturday, April 25.
