Alyssa Manley returns to highlight the Orange midfield
This is the third in a four-part preview series on Cuse.com where we'll take a position-by-position look at the 2015 Orange. Previously featured: goalkeepers and forwards.
Midfielders
Much like the forwards and goalkeepers position groups that have already been featured, the Syracuse midfield features a standout senior with a wealth of experience.
Two-Time All-American Alyssa Manley returns to the Syracuse midfield for her final year of eligibility after spending the summer winning a gold medal with the U.S. National Team at the Pan Am Games. Manley scored a goal in the semifinal match to lift the U.S. squad to the title game in that tournament.
In her first-three years with the Orange, Manley has played in every game, including a consecutive-starts streak of 44 games, amassing 45 total points with 14 goals.
The student-athlete with the next-most experience joining Manley in the Orange midfield is sophomore Erin Gillingham, who played in 21 games last season, starting seven. Returners Laura Hurff and Allie Mannheimer have also played in the midfield for the Orange but also play additional positions.
The 'Cuse midfield has plenty of fresh faces in 2015, beginning with graduate student Alma Fenne. The Amsterdam, Netherlands native who previously played for the Netherlands U18 team and U16 team features to play a key role on the Orange this season.
In addition, another newcomer with international experience joins the Syracuse midfield as well, with Zoe Wilson spending her summer playing for Ireland's U21 team before coming to Syracuse. The Atrim, Ireland native captained Ireland's U18 team previously as well.
Syracuse also has a freshman with hometown ties to Manley. Jamie Martin comes to Syracuse having played at Warwick High School in Lititz, Pa. like the senior standout. Martin recorded 81 career points on 37 goals and a school-record 44 assists. She earned all-state honors as a senior and was named to the all-league team three times in her career.
Fellow freshman Niki Neidhart is another newcomer looking to contribute in the 'Cuse midfield, joining the Orange after spending four seasons at Scripps Ranch High School in San Diego, Calif. She led her team to three-straight CIF San Diego section championships and recorded 56 career points on 30 goals and 26 assists.
Check back to Cuse.com on Wednesday for the fourth and final installment of the season preview series. The Orange open the 2015 campaign on Friday, Aug. 28 at Stanford at 7 p.m. eastern.Â
