Colin Bennie enters the meet as the No. 4 overall seed
Syracuse has six student-athletes set to compete at this week's NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, which begins on Friday in Birmingham, Alabama. Cuse.com will take an event-by-event look at each of the five events Syracuse will be competing in as we head towards the championships. Past previews: men's mile, men's 60-meter hurdles, women's 60-meter dash.
By the time Colin Bennie gets set for the 5000-meter finals at 8:05 p.m. on Friday, he'll be the fifth member of the Orange to take to the track, but first with the opportunity to score points. The sophomore is slated to compete in the meet's first final, as the No. 4 seed in the event.
Bennie, who already earned All-America honors this season in cross country, will look to pick up his second first team selection in the meet after posting a personal best 13:38.81 as a seed time in the 5k at the Iowa State Classic, where he took third in the event that featured six-other members of Friday's field.
Bennie was edged out by Virginia Tech's Thomas Curtin and Tulsa's Marc Scott – two of the only-three to enter with better seed times in the field – but finished ahead of Gabe Gonzalez (Arkansas), Daniel Everett (Iowa State), Dylan Lafond (Illinois) and Ryan Walling (Ole Miss).
He then edged out another two competitors in the field at the ACC Championships, finishing ahead of Louisville's Edwin Kibichiy and NC State's Luis Vargas during his bronze medal performance, with teammate Justyn Knight – who's only running the 3000-meters this weekend – and Curtin taking first and second respectively.
The ACC's four competitors in the race is second only to the PAC-12's five runners. No other conference has more than two.
Bennie will look for his second All-America honors of the year on ESPN3 at 8:05 on Friday.
