Syracuse claims top time in first varsity four competition
CLEMSON, S.C. – The No. 19 Syracuse University women's rowing team had a strong debut at the 2016 Clemson Invite on Saturday. Syracuse knocked off Harvard for the first time since 2001 in the first varsity eight race in the morning, then followed up with the best time in the first varsity four competition in the afternoon.
"We are still at a time in the program where we are experiencing some firsts or doing things that we haven't achieved in a long time," head coach Justin Moore said. "Getting out in front of Harvard was something that in the last five years we have been working really hard to do."
In the team's first race of the day, Syracuse finished in third place in the morning's second heat of the first varsity eight competition, covering the 2,000-meter course at Lake Hartwell in 6:50.4. The Orange defeated the Crimson by more than four seconds, claiming its first victory against Harvard in 15 years. SU recorded the seventh-best time of the morning session in that race, as well.
Syracuse recorded one second-place finish and two third-place showings in its other four races in the morning session. The third varsity eight boat took home runner-up honors in the second heat of the morning.
The first varsity four crew was the highlight of the afternoon session, finishing in first place in the third heat of the competition. Syracuse clocked in at 7:18.0, which was the fastest time by a varsity four boat thus far at the Clemson Invite.
"We have had the best winter of training that we have ever had under my tutelage as a coach," commented Moore. "That was on display. The team is really coming together and unified. I have never seen this team more committed to one another than they were today."
The second varsity four crew also recorded a victory in the afternoon, finishing in first place in the second heat. The Orange covered the course in 7:35.5. Syracuse's second varsity eight boat narrowly missed out on the team's third win of the session, finishing 0.6 seconds behind Indiana in the third heat of the afternoon.
The Clemson Invite concludes on Sunday morning. Syracuse will be on the water at 8:38 a.m. in the second heat of the first varsity eight competition.
