Strong Finish to Regular Season
4/23/2016 1:21:00 PM | Women's Rowing
Orange picked up one win and three second-place finishes
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 16 Syracuse women's rowing team competed in its final race of the 2016 regular season on Saturday morning against No. 3 Ohio State and Michigan State on the Griggs Reservoir on the Scioto River. Syracuse recorded three second-place showings and a victory in third varsity eight competition.
"It is an extremely challenging turnaround for the women," head coach Justin Moore said. "We had half the team arriving back at Syracuse at 1 a.m. on Monday morning following three races at the Clemson Invite. We were back to training on Tuesday and then loading the boats for travel to Ohio on Thursday to race one of the best teams in the country. It's a lot to ask of the women on our team. They did a phenomenal job. They did a great job of increasing their level of racing."
The third varsity eight crew recorded the lone victory of the day for the Orange. Syracuse covered the 2,000-meter course in 6:42.0, defeating Michigan State by more than six seconds.
"Our third varsity eight won by open water," commented Moore. "What we now have within the program is a collection of young women who can say that they beat Ohio State. While it is not in the upper boats, it is something that we aspire to in all boat classes in our program. We were really proud of them."
The Orange put together strong showings in the first and second varsity eight races and first varsity four competition. Syracuse placed second in each race behind three-time defending NCAA champion Ohio State.
"For the varsity eight to close the gap," added Moore. "At Clemson, we were no closer than nine seconds to them. Today, to close that gap to six seconds is a significant step forward. I think it is representative some of the speed our varsity eight is starting to find as we head into the championship season."
In the second varsity four race, SU placed third behind two Ohio State boats. The Orange finished in a time of 7:09.03.
With the completion of the regular season, Syracuse begins to prepare for the 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship in Clemson, S.C. Racing will begin on Lake Hartwell on Friday, May 13.
