Orange outperform seeding in two events
GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The Syracuse University women's rowing team finished 13th overall at the 2016 NCAA Championship on Sunday at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center. Syracuse outperformed its seeding in two of the three races it competed in and held its seed in the first varsity four competition.
"When you come to a championship regatta you are dealing with all of the best teams in the country," head coach Justin Moore stated. "There is no better athletes and no better coaches anywhere else. It was a really good performance. It means that the athletes and coaches were on point. I am very pleased about that."
The first varsity eight crew finished in sixth place in the petite final, 12th overall. Syracuse covered the 2,000-meter course in 6:31.733, one second behind 11th-place Michigan. The Orange outperformed their seeding by four positions.
In the second varsity eight competition, Syracuse placed third in the third-level final, 15th overall. The boat finished in 6:39.067. The Orange was able to outperform their seeding by one slot in the second varsity eight.
The first varsity four crew held its seed as it finished as runners-up in the third-level final, 14th overall. Syracuse notched a time of 7:25.635 on Sunday.
"We have two seniors in each boat, which means we return 18 women," commented Moore. "The experience they gained here is invaluable. I think that you have to do it before you do it really well. The way the team performed here left us thinking that we have the ability to come back and become a perennial top-10 team in the country."
