Over the coming weeks, head coach Ange Bradley will be announcing her class of 2017. Previously, she announced Emma LiklyÂ
A four-year letterwinner at Sparrows Point High School in Baltimore Maryland, Sarah Luby will join head coach Ange Bradley's Orange for the 2017 season.
"Sarah has a passion and love for the game that matches that of Alyssa Manley," Bradley said. "Sarah just loves to play hockey whenever and wherever and with whomever. She is free and open to learning her sport. Her passion for the sport along with her skill, speed and size will position her to compete for a starting position this fall. I am excited to have Sarah join our team and look forward to coaching her."
Luby played forward and midfield for Sparrows Point under coaches Corin Gwin and George Scheulen. She earned First Team All-County honors in each of her final-three seasons after garnering Second Team All-County honors as a freshman. As a senior, she was also tabbed as a First Team All-Maryland selection and was selected to the Maryland Senior All-Star Game.
"Sarah was clearly the most skilled, accomplished and dominate player that our program has ever had the pleasure to share time with," Scheulen said. "She is treasured by her teammates and coaches alike. Our program, and each player, is better for her having been involved."
She also ran varsity track for all-four years of high school and was a member of the National Honor Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society, where she served as a secretary of the organization. She was also involved in the ethics team, the mock trial team, Envirothon, Principal's Advisory Council and matching band where she was a drum major as well as playing the clarinet.
The daughter of Thomas and Kathy Luby, Sarah played her club hockey with the Baltimore Stix under Denise Wolf and Heather Unkart.
"Sarah is a natural leader both on and off the field," Wolf said. "She knows how to motivate her teammates and through her example and encouragement, they develop a strong work ethic. She is a dedicated player who puts 100% into practices and games. She knows how to balance her school work with her athletic commitments and for that, she is an extremely well rounded, successful person. Whether it is in the classroom or out on the field, Sarah is a force!"
Luby's goals extend well beyond the playing field as she brings 36 college credits with her already after taking classes at a local community college in high school. While at SU, she intends to pursue bachelors degrees in neuroscience and psychology and eventually work towards a master's degree.
She chose to come play field hockey at Syracuse because of its high-performance training environment as well as stellar academic reputation.
"I chose Syracuse because it was a perfect fit," Luby said. "The intense practice and will to win is something I really liked about the program, I stepped on campus and I just knew."
Luby is eager to put on the Syracuse jersey and have a chance to take the field at J.S. Coyne Stadium with her teammates this fall and play in the nation's best conference.
"To be given the opportunity to represent The Orange on Coyne field means the world to me," Luby said. "I can't wait to get on Coyne and prove that I deserve to be there and represent my team. To have the opportunity to play in the ACC is amazing and going to be one of the biggest mental and physical challenges of coming to Syracuse. The competition will never be less than expected and will always be a fight to the finish."
While coach Bradley compared the competitive spirit and love for the game to that of three-time 'Cuse All-American Alyssa Manley, Luby most wants to emulate Manley's four-year teammate and fellow All-American Emma Russell's goal-scoring ability.
"The Syracuse player I want to emulate is Emma Russell because she scores goals!" Luby said. "She puts the team on the score board and helped drive her team to victory, not only with goals but through assist on offensive runs."
