Picks Up 7th All-America Honors
Syracuse standout junior Justyn Knight picked up his third top-three finish at an NCAA Championship event this season, when he finished third in the 5,000-meter run on Friday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Knight had previously been runner up at the NCAA Cross Country Championships and also took second in the 5k at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Friday's third-place finish earned him First Team All-America honors for the third time this season and earned him his seventh All-America selection in his career between the three seasons.
"I was cramping a bit from the start," Knight said. "I think with 600-meters to go, I was getting ready to make my move. With about 400 left there was a little tussling and I got bumped and it threw off my whole stride. I tried to finish strong but the guys got the best of me at the end."
The race was paced at over a minute slower than Knight's personal-best time, with the Vaughn, Ontario native crossed the line in 14:36.23. Grant Fisher of Stanford came away with the title in 14:35.60, followed by Arkansas' Jack Bruce in 14:35.88. The trio was three-wide coming down the home stretch, with Fisher ending with the strongest kick.
"I went into the race without a plan, I'm pretty good at adapting and that's how you have to approach every championship race, because no one expects a race to be won in 14:35," Knight said. "I was open ended, made a move, stuck with it and the result is the result."
Knight's All-America honors concludes the 2017 NCAA Championships for the Orange with five All-America selections, including Paige Stoner (second team/3000-meter steeplechase), Colin Bennie (honorable mention/10,000-meters), Tia Thevenin (honorable mention/100-meter hurdles) and Aidan Tooker (honorable mention/3000-meter steeplechase).
Next for Knight will be the Canadian Trials from July 3-9, in an attempt to qualify for the World Championships in London in August.
