Senior Dustin Riley (Carson City, NV) paced the Orangemen for the second-consecutive week by winning three events. He captured first place in the 1,000 freestyle (9:55.82), the 200 breaststroke (2:10.14) and the 200 butterfly (1:53.52). His time in the butterfly qualified him for the BIG EAST Championship in February.
Three other Orangemen recorded BIG EAST Championship qualifying times. Senior Djordje Filipovic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia), last years BIG EAST champion in the 200 IM, is eligible to defend his crown this season as he swam the event in a time of 1:55.47 against the Pirates. Similarly, classmate Josko Vucetic (Split, Croatia), the 2000 BIG EAST champion in the 200 backstroke, beat the conference qualifying standard today with a time of 1:55.31. Junior diver Adam Earle (Camillus, NY) won both the one and thee-meter dives against Seton Hall. His score of 295.20 in the three-meter puts him in contention for a BIG EAST title in that event come February.
Other strong performances were turned in by senior David Hanthorn (Manheim, PA) and freshman Spencer Raymond (Idstein, Germany). Hanthorn touched first in the 100 and 200 freestyle races. Raymond won the 50 freestyle and was part of the first-place 400 medley relay team.
In womens competition, the Orange won 11 of 13 events, however the 200 breaststroke and the 400 freestyle relay were scored as exhibitions. Syracuse had the top three times turned in by freshmen in the 200 breaststroke and all three of those times met the BIG EAST Championship entry standard, led by Annie Tudryns (Springfield, MA) 2:21.50 pace.
Senior Eleanor Thoet (Bath, ME) had an outstanding day. She garnered first place finishes in the 100 freestyle, the 200 freestyle and as part of the 400 medley relay team. Thoets time of 53.24 in the 100 free qualified her for the BIG EAST Championship.
Rookie Elyse McDonough (Delmar, NY) won the 50 freestyle and the 200 butterfly against the Pirates. Her time of 2:06.53 in the fly sends her to the conference championship in February. Junior Kelly Bryon (Uxbridge, Ontario) qualified in the 200 IM by a hundredth of a second (2:10.46).
Sophomore Julie Van Deusen (Bear, DE) and senior Sara Mastropole (Milford, CT) won the one-meter and three-meter dives, respectively. Each bested the BIG EAST Championship entry scores in those events.
Senior Mindy Morse (Marblehead, CT) contributed to the win against Seton Hall with first-place finishes in the 500 and 1,000 freestyles.
Syracuse (2-0) will be at home again next Saturday, Oct. 28, when it hosts BIG EAST rival Pittsburgh. The diving will begin at 9 a.m. while the swimming gets underway at noon.
