Pittsburgh Competes In First Of Two Dual Meets This Weekend
The Panthers were at St. Bonaventure in their first dual meet of the
season Friday, Oct. 27. They prevailed 133-104 on the men's side and
148-86 in the women's competition.
Pittsburgh freshman Eric Limkemann set a pool record in the 1,000
freestyle with a time of 9:34.95.
The Panther men are the defending BIG EAST champions. They welcome back 12 letterwinners from a team that posted a 7-2 dual-meet record and a 4-0 mark against BIG EAST Conference teams last year.
The Pittsburgh women return 15 letterwinners from a team that finished 7-5 last year, 3-1 in the BIG EAST. The Panthers were sixth at the conference championship meet with 380 points.
Riley Revin' Up
Senior Dustin Riley has paced the Orangemen by winning a total of six
events in the past two dual meets. Last week, he captured first place
in the 1,000 freestyle (9:55.82), the 200 breaststroke (2:10.14) and the
200 butterfly (1:53.52). His time in the butterfly qualified him for
the BIG EAST Championship in February.
Three Other Orangeman Qualify
In addition to Riley, three other Orangemen recorded BIG EAST
Championship qualifying times against Seton Hall. Senior Djordje
Filipovic, last year's BIG EAST champion in the 200 IM, is eligible to
defend his crown this season as he swam the event in a time of 1:55.47
against the Pirates. Similarly, classmate Josko Vucetic, the 2000 BIG
EAST champion in the 200 backstroke, beat the conference qualifying
standard with a time of 1:55.31. Junior diver Adam Earle won both the
one and three-meter dives against Seton Hall. His score of 295.20 on
the three-meter puts him in contention for a BIG EAST title in that
event come February.
Hanthorn Wins Freestyle Events
Senior David Hanthorn touched first in the 100 and 200 freestyle races
against Seton Hall. He clocked a 47.94 in the 100 freestyle and a
1:46.02 in the 200 freestyle.
Rookie Raymond Contributes to Victory with Two Wins
Freshman Spencer Raymond won the 50 freestyle (22.04) and was part of
the first-place 400 medley relay team against Seton Hall.
Freshman Women Dominate 200 Breaststroke Against Pirates
In women's competition, the Orange won 11 of 13 events, however, the
200 breaststroke and the 400 freestyle relay were scored as
exhibitions. Syracuse had the top three times turned in by freshmen in
the 200 breaststroke and all three of those times met the BIG EAST
Championship entry standard, led by Annie Tudryn's 2:21.50 pace.
Thoet Has Stellar Day Against Seton Hall
Senior Eleanor Thoet garnered first-place finishes in the 100
freestyle, the 200 freestyle and as part of the 400 medley relay team.
Thoet's time of 53.24 in the 100 free qualified her for the BIG EAST
Championship.
McDonough Shines Again
Rookie Elyse McDonough won the 50 freestyle and the 200 butterfly
against the Pirates. Her time of 2:06.53 in the fly sends her to the
conference championship in February. She won three events versus St.
Bonaventure.
Bryon Qualifies in the 200 IM
Junior Kelly Bryon qualified for the BIG EAST Championship in the 200
IM by a hundredth of a second (2:10.46). She finished first in this
event against Seton Hall.
Divers Dominate
Sophomore Julie Van Deusen and senior Sara Mastropole won the one-meter
and three-meter dives, respectively. Each bested the BIG EAST
Championship entry scores in those events.
More from Morse
Senior Mindy Morse contributed to the win against Seton Hall with
first-place finishes in the 500 (5:21.28) and 1,000 freestyles
(10:55.38).
