Dana Fiume Chat Transcript

Here is what Dana Fiume, a senior on the volleyball team, had to say during her chat on Oct. 10.
Beth Queen Asks: What does SU need to do in order to make the Big East tournament this fall?
Now that we are 1-3 in the BIG EAST, we need to come together as a team, and we need to beat the teams remaining on our schedule in BIG EAST play.
Gabe Byrne Asks: How does it feel to be this close to the all-time kills record?
I take it as an honor because I watched Jen Murphy, the girl who has the record, on my recruiting trip. She was a great player and a great hitter. I think it is an honor to be considered even in the same category as her.
Marlo Asks: What opponent has been the toughest in your SU career?
Most outside hitters on any team have been a challenge. Karen Gill from Georgetown has probably been the toughest and biggest rival. She is pretty tough because she hits pretty well and she plays really good defense. It is hard to get a kill when she is defending.
J.P. Mancini Asks: Aside from the kills record, do you have any other goals for your senior year?
I want to end my career with memories of a good season - that is the most important thing to me. Last year, we ended on a good note. As long as I end my career being satisfied with the team's performance, then I will be satisfied.
D. Nice Asks: What is your greatest athletic goal that you have yet to achieve?
Going to the NCAA tournament - that has been my goal since I have been here. We have not made it yet. Last year, we were only one game away. Now, our goal is to make it to the BIG EAST tournmanet. If we could make the BIG EAST tournament, that would be very satisfying since we have dug ourselves a hole by being 1-3 to start BIG EAST play.
Chelle Stack Asks: Rumor has it that you are an avid gymnastics fan...who is your favorite gymnast?
Yes, I am a huge gymnastics fan. My favorite gymnast is Jamie D. from the US Olympic team. As for being inspired by any gymnast, I'd have to say no because volleyball and gymnastics are completely different.
DAVE Frog Asks: I followed your awesome high school basketball career...Is there any chance you'll play for SU this season?
Probably not. I have not played in four years. I played two sports in high school and it was hard mentally to play two sports. Emotionally, it would be tough to play another tough season after the volleyball season. And, I'm not sure if I could play at the level they play here.
M. Fiume Asks: Do you plan to continue playing volleyball when college is over?
I am very undecided about my future, but volleyball will always be a part of whatever I do. I will make sure of it.
Eric Holzmann Asks: If you are to break the kills record, what would that mean to your volleyball career?
It would be an honor to be on the top of any list. I've started for four years so my statistics are going to be high because of that. I will be very honored if I get the record.
bob brigandi Asks: When did you play your first volley ball match?
I started playing in junior high and I was really bad. I couldn't even serve the ball over the net. Even to this day, I do not know why I did not give up on volleyball because I was better at other sports. I'm really glad that I stuck it with it though.
John Smith Asks: Which team in the Big East gives you the most trouble?
We have had problems with several teams, but two teams that I personally have not won against are Rutgers and Notre Dame. We have not played either team this season. Rutgers is undefeated and we hope to upset them this season. Realistically speaking, I'd love to upset Notre Dame, but Rutgers is a more realistic goal for us because Notre Dame is in a league of their own.
Merlin Thompson Asks: Hi Dana, I hope you break Jen's mark of 1,605 kills. How do you think your defense has improved over the pass four years?
Defense has been the biggest struggle I've had. I've been trying to be more confident and more aggressive with opposing hitters. I think my defense has improved because I worked on it a lot in the off-season.
