During the week of 10-23-00 Dwight Freeney became ill with a viral syndrome and was unable to practice during the open game week. At the end of that week and the week following, Dwight returned to his Broomfield, CT home to recuperate.
Upon his return to campus on November 6, 2000 a thorough medical work-up was conducted to determine his health status. Blood tests and x-ray studies were conducted. These tests and studies revealed not only a resolving viral illness, but also a contusion to Dwight's spleen. Further evaluation by medical specialists regarding this new finding was done this week. They have determined that it is not advisable for Dwight to play until his spleen has healed.
Dwight will not play in the Miami or Rutgers games as a result of this injury. Re-evaluation on a regular basis will be conducted to determine his healing progress.
