
Volleyball Loses Season Opener To Portland

Portland (1-0) won the first game, 15-11. Syracuse (0-1) won the second game, 15-4, but lost the third, 12-15. The Orangewomen won game four, 15-6, and lost game five, 11-15, in rally points.
Senior outside hitter Julie Nicholson (Horseheads, NY) had 16 kills to go with a team-high 12 digs and six blocks for the Orangewomen. Senior outside hitter Julianna Stokes (Naperville, IL) contributed 12 kills to the effort.
Defensively, junior Jing Jing Wang (Beijing, China) blocked a career-high six Portland attacks, while freshman Christen Casey (Long Beach, IN) added six blocks in her collegiate debut.
Junior setter Noreen Carroll (LaGrange, IL) set 60 assists and added nine digs.
The Orangewomen continue their stay in Utah playing two matches Saturday. Syracuse faces Southern Methodist at 3 p.m. and Weber State at 9 p.m.
