
Lantier's Seventh-Inning Triple Lifts Orange Past Providence, 8-5

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The Syracuse softball team (10-6) took down Providence (4-10) 8-5 on the final day of the Terrapin Invitational. Gabby Lantier's triple in the top of the seventh inning put the Orange over the Friars to complete their weekend 3-1 in Maryland. Â
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
In the top of the first, leadoff hitter Jadyn Burney sent the ball into the back wall of center field, recording the first triple of her career. Madison Knight stepped up to the plate, doubling to deep left field, giving Burney the go ahead to step across home plate, giving the Orange a 1-0 lead.Â
Julianna Verni (1-1) pitched back-to-back scoreless innings, striking out four players.Â
Knight stepped in to relieve Verni in the circle in the fifth inning. The senior struck out a batter looking to end the fifth inning. Knight was first in the batting lineup in the top of the sixth, hitting a home run on the first pitch to even the score 3-3.Â
Providence picked up the momentum, scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, taking the lead just before the last frame of play. The Friars had scored on a fielder's choice and Â
At the top of the seventh inning, Taylor Davison drew a walk while Knight singled to the third base player. Lopez reached first base after a fielding error by Providence, loading the bases. Kaimi Tulua was then hit by a pitch, advancing the bases and bringing Davison home to score. Lauren Fox reached first base on a fielder's choice, but Kendall Gaunt, pinch running for Knight, was called out at home. With two outs on the board, Erika Zamora was hit by a pitch, moving the runners one base each and sending Lopez across home plate to tie the game 5-5. Lantier stepped up to the plate, hitting a triple to right field and bringing pinch runner Sophia Taliaferro, Fox and Zamora home to score and take the 8-5 lead.Â
In the bottom of the final frame, Providence was unable to reach a base, ultimately giving Syracuse the 8-5 victory on the last day of the Terrapin Invitational.Â

- SU hit two triples in a game for the first time since facing North Carolina on May 8, 2022.Â
- Syracuse's comeback marked its first win after trailing through six innings since defeating Niagara on March 19, 2023.Â

Syracuse will play at the UMBC Tournament in Baltimore, Maryland from March 6-8. The Orange will face UAlbany, UMBC and Morgan State throughout the weekend.Â
