
Orangewomen Soccer Defeats Illinois in Home Opener, 3-0

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (September 1, 2000) -- The Syracuse University women's soccer team posted a 3-0 victory over the University of Illinois this evening at the Soccer Stadium at Lampe Athletics Complex. The win marks the first of the season for the Orangewomen, who entered tonight's game with an 0-2 record.
Freshman Nina Scalzo (Webster, NY) opened the scoring for Syracuse as she took a pass from teammate Erin O'Grady (Glastonbury, CT) and shot it past Illinois' Sarah Heggen for a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, O'Grady found senior Jen Mena (North Grafton, MA) to increase the lead to 2-0 with 40:34 remaining. Just over 13 minutes later, Scalzo tallied an unassisted goal to solidify the lead at 3-0. Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Karlander (Carmel, IN) had 12 saves for the Orangewomen, while Heggen tallied two for the Illini.
The Orangewomen will return to action on Monday, September 4 when they travel to Clifton Commons in Albany, NY for a 1 p.m. game against the University of Massachusetts.
