
Orangewomen Volleyball To Play Two Conference Matches This Weekend

The Syracuse University women’s volleyball team (8-8, 1-4) looks to climb the standings with two conference matches this weekend. SU meets Rutgers on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. at Manley Field House. The Scarlet Knights are 8-3 overall and 3-0 in BIG EAST play. On Sunday, Oct. 14, SU meets Villanova at 1 p.m. at the Women’s Building. The Wildcats stand at 5-8 and 1-2 in the conference.
Freshman Laura Koster (Houston, TX/Westfield) and senior co-captain Carol Munger (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) led the SU offense during its three-matches last weekend. Koster recorded double figures in kills in two of three matches and also had two double-doubles. Koster broke the SU single-match total blocks record for a three-game match in the win against Central Connecticut State. She had 12 total blocks, including a career-high five solo blocks. Munger had a team-high 10 kills against Connecticut and is on pace to break into SU’s top ten list for kills in a career. Munger currently has 596 kills, 33 short of Julie Nicholson who is in 10th place with 629 kills.
Sophomore Christen Casey (Long Beach, IN/Marquette) leads the team in digs with 129. She tallied 31 digs in the last three matches, including 13 versus Boston College and 11 against Connecticut. Senior co-captain Noreen Carroll (La Grange, IL/Lyons Township) recorded her fourth double-double of the season against Boston College with 46 assists and 10 digs. Already SU’s all-time assists leader, Carroll is moving up the charts in several of the school’s all-time record categories. Her 117 matches and 417 games played are closing in on the top ten as is her 227 career block assists, 260 total blocks and .63 blocks per game. She has moved into seventh place in career digs with 823.
Syracuse has a 7-4 advantage in the series against Rutgers, including last year’s 3-1 win. The Orangewomen also lead the series against Villanova, 14-10-2 with a 3-0 victory in 2000.
