Continuing to recognize Syacuse head basketball coach Jim Boeheim’s 25 years of service to SU, SUathletics.com presents “Day III: Boeheim 25 Years in 25 Days.” Roosevelt Bouie was the teams leading scorer and rebounder in the 1978-79 season. The Orangemen captured win No. 1,000 in the third year of Boeheim’s tenure. The win came in the first round of the Carrier Classic against Western Michigan.
Year Three: The Wins Keep Coming
Syracuse finished eighth in the final Associated Press poll. Boeheim’s bunch finished the season with a 26-4 record, tying Boeheim’s first year for the most wins in a single season.
Statistically the Orange ranked in the top-20 more categories than any other team in the country. SU was first in scoring margin (17.2), third in win-loss percentage (.867), fourth in scoring (88.7), fifth in field goal percentage (.534), fifth in rebound and margin (9.3) and 14th in field goal percentage defense (.437). Boeheim was named Distrisct II Coach of the Year by the United States Basketball Writers Association. In three years on the Hill Boeheim had a 74-14 record.
Boeheim Factoid
The Orangemen have the longest Division I home-court-winning streak (45 games). The 1978-79 campaign was the third straight undefeated season for the Orangemen in Manley Field House.
BIG GAME: 1,000 Wins
Syracuse becomes the 14th Division I team to reach the 1000-win level when it beat Western Michigan, 93-72. The win came in the first round of the second annual Carrier Classic. Roosevelt Bouie led the Orangemen with a double-double scoring 19 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.
