Coach Jim Boeheim's fourth year was the first year of the BIG EAST Conference. Syracuse finished first in the inaugural year of the conference. For the second consecutive year Roosevelt Bouie led the Orange in scoring. Louis Orr led SU in rebounds, averaging 8.5 per game.
Year IV: The Birth of the BIG EAST Conference
The BIG EAST was born on May 31, 1979. In the first-ever BIG EAST pre-season coaches poll, Syracuse was tapped to win the league title. Posting its sixth straight 20-win season, SU was 26-4 and 5-1 in the BIG EAST. The Orangemen finished first in the regular season. Syracuse lost 87-81 loss to Georgetown in the second round of the BIG EAST Tournament.

On April 15, 1980, coach Boeheim received the Mayor's Achievement Award from the city of Syracuse.
BIG GAME: Bouie Pours In 30 vs. Temple
In the Orangemen's 93-77 victory against the Temple Owls Roosevelt Bouie scored a career-high 30 points. Bouie was a two-time All-American at Syracuse. As a freshman in the 1976-77 season, Bouie blocked 91 shots the most by any freshman in Orangemen history. In each of his four years on the Hill, Bouie led the team in blocks, averaging 2.8 blocks per game for his career.
