In the fifth season of coach Jim Boeheim's reign Syracuse posted a 22-12 record. Though Orangemen went 6-8 in BIG EAST regular season play, they won the BIG EAST championship in a thriller.
Year V: 20-Plus Wins Again
SU posted it's seventh straight 20-win season, finishing with a record of 22-12 (6-8 in the BIG EAST) SU ranked fourth nationally in home attendance, averaging 16,440 per game. The Orangemen drew the largest single-game crowd ever for an on-campus site with 26,257 for their game against UCONN. Syracuse won the BIG EAST Tournament defeating Villanova, 83-80, in three overtimes. The Orangemen lost to Tulsa in the finals of the NIT tournament 86-84 in overtime. Boeheim ranks as the second winningest active coach (five years or more as head coach at a Division I school) with a winning percentage of .803 (122-30).

Boeheim became the only Division I coach to win 100 games in his first four seasons.
BIG GAME: 'Cuse Defeats Nova In Three Overtimes
Syracuse defeated Villanova 83-80 in triple overtime to win the BIG EAST Basketball Championship. The tournament was held in the Carrier Dome at Syracuse. The Orangemen shot 55 % from the field in the first half to propel them to a 35-33 halftime lead. Trailing 82-80 with four seconds left in the third overtime, Villanova called a time out, but they had none left. Dan Schayes made the ensuing technical foul shot pushing the Orange's lead to 83-80. Erich Santifer and Tony "Red" Bruin were named to the All Tournament Team while Orangeman, Leo Rautins, took home the hardware for Most Valuable Player.
