
SMITH NAMED BIG EAST DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Syracuse University junior linebacker Clifton Smith (Freeport, NY) earned The BIG EAST Conference Defensive Player of the Week Award for his performance in SU’s 22-14 victory against Virginia Tech. Smith led the SU defense with 11 tackles, including three for a loss, and had one sack in the Orangemen’s defeat of the Hokies, who were ranked fifth in the nation prior to the game. Syracuse held Virginia Tech to just 90 rushing yards after the Hokies had averaged 234.0 yards on the ground per game through their first six contests.
Smith is SU’s second-leading tackler this season with 72 stops, including 45 solo tackles. He also has three sacks, two quarterback hurries and one blocked field goal for the Orangemen (7-2 overall, 4-0 BIG EAST).
Syracuse, which is ranked 19th in the Associated Press poll and 22nd in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, will play West Virginia on November 10 at Noon in the Carrier Dome. The game will be televised on ESPN Regional Television.
