Muchnick's Late Goal Lifts #4 'Cuse Past #17 Duke
4/4/2026 6:37:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
Behind a late goal from Emma Muchnick, No. 4 Syracuse (11-3, 6-2 ACC) topped No. 17 Duke (9-5, 5-3 ACC) 10-9 at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, North Carolina on Saturday afternoon. The win extended the Orange's win streak to 11 games.
Muchnick was one of three players to score a hat trick, joined by Molly Guzik and Ashlee Volpe. Guzik scored all three of hers in the first half while Volpe notched each of hers in the second half.
Izzy Lahah and Coco Vandiver each caused two turnovers. Lahah added six ground balls to tie a career-best. Guyette recorded eight saves in the win.
Duke scored first before Muchnick broke the ice for Syracuse moments after the Duke goal to keep it level at 1-1. It was a defensive rest of the quarter, though, with it remaining tied until the 4:45 mark when Guzik got on the board with her first goal to give the Orange the lead for the first time. Syracuse would take the 2-1 edge into the second quarter.
Guzik scored twice more in the second quarter to give her the first half hat trick, joined by a free position goal from Bri Peters. The Blue Devils remained close, though, scoring twice to keep it a 5-4 game at the break.
Duke came out of the half and scored two unanswered goals to take their first lead since early in the first quarter. The Orange wouldn't score until the 4:42 mark of the third quarter when Volpe scored her first of the affair to tie things back up at 6-6. Less than two minutes later, she scored again to retake the lead. Muchnick tacked on one more to give the Orange an 8-6 lead at the end of the third.
Volpe kept it going, scoring her third goal of the game with 11:42 remaining to give Syracuse a 9-6 edge. A two-minute non-releasable yellow card against the Orange at the 7:14 mark shifted momentum, though. Dule rattled off three straight goals in the span of just a minute-and-a-half to tie things up at 9-9 with 5:20 to go.
Yet, Muchnick had an answer, scoring with three minutes to go and giving the Orange the lead for good. The Blue Devils had one last chance with seconds remaining, but Guyette turned the shot away as it hit off the pipe as the final horn sounded.
The Orange return home next week when they take on No. 14 Notre Dame at the JMA Wireless Dome. The game will serve as Syracuse's Senior Day and kick off the 'Cuse Tripleheader with men's lacrosse's contests against Virginia and the Spring Football game. For tickets, visit cuse.com/tickets.
