Year XIII: Boeheim 25 Years In 25 Days

On Monday, November 12, Syracuse plays Manhattan at the Carrier Dome in the first round of the NIT. The game will open SU coach Jim Boeheim's 26th year as the leader of Orangemen basketball. SUathletics.com is presenting the 13th season in "Boeheim 25 Years In 25 Days." The 1988-89 campaign was SU's second consecutive 30-win season. In his final season, Sherman Douglas continued to leave his mark on the Orange record book.

Year XIII: The Trio- Coleman, Douglas & Owens

Record 30-8, 10-6 in the BIG EAST

Syracuse made it to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. The Orangemen lost to Illinois, 89-86, in the Midwest Regional final.

The Orange became the first school to break the half million mark in home attendance, finishing the season at 537, 967.

Syracuse made a record-setting 7th appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament championship game where the Orange lost to Georgetown 88-79.

Georgetown, SU and St. John's have won all 10 of the conference tourneys played thus far.

SU was the first team to make four straight tournament championship game appearances and Sherman Douglas became the first player to play in four straight.

Derrick Coleman was second in the nation in total rebounds with 422. Coleman broke Rony Seikaly's career rebounding record of 1, 094, finishing with 1,139. Seikaly's record only stood for one season. Coleman is the only Syracuse player to top 300 rebounds three straight seasons.

Sherman Douglas became the NCAA's all-time assist leader finishing his career with 960 assists. This breaks the record of Northeatern's Andre LaFleur who had 894 from 1983-1987.

Among Douglas' other passing marks, he became the BIG EAST career assist leader with 426, he tied the NCAA single game record with 22 assists vs. Providence and broke every Syracuse assist record for games, single-seasons and career.

In addition to being the assist leader, Douglas became SU's all-time scoring leader breaking David Bing's 23 year-old scoring record of 1,883. Douglas finished his career with 2,060 points.

Billy Owens became Syracuse's all-time freshman scoring leader. Owens has 494 points on the season, breaking the record of 460 set by Dwayne "Pearl" Washington in 1983-1984.

All five Syracuse starters topped the 400 point mark this season. The only other time this happened was in 1986-1987 when SU went to the NCAA championship game.

Syracuse set a record of most points scored for a single season scoring 3,410 points in 38 games. The 1988-89 team also had the most assists and steals in a season were set this year with 762 and 340 respectively.

Factoid
Jim Boeheim reached the 300 win mark this season when the Orangemen defeated St. Francis (PA) 105-63. Boeheim is the third fastest to reach this mark.

BIG GAME: Hoyas in the Dome
In their second meeting of the season, the Orangemen defeated the Georgetown Hoyas 82-76 in overtime. The game, which was played in the Carrier Dome in front of 32, 683 fans was the Orange's final game of the regular season and set a new on-campus record in attendance. It was the largest crowd to watch a basketball game at the Carrier Dome in the 1980s. Derrick Coleman turned in a stellar performance with 21 points and 13 rebounds, while senior All-American Sherman Douglas had 16 points to go along with five assists. Freshman Alonzo Mourning scored 16 points and had 7 rebounds as the starting center for the Hoyas. Georgetown had depth at the center position with sophomore, Dikembe Mutombo coming off the bench scoring just six points and collecting six rebounds.
