SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse University women's soccer team shutout Colgate 4-0 in the season finale at the Soccer Stadium on Wednesday night.
Senior co-captain Candy Reich's (Pembroke, Mass./Silver Lake Regional) goal 44 seconds into the contest proved to be the game-winner. Reich collected a ricocheted shot from sophomore forward Nina Scalzo (Webster, N.Y./Webster) and put it past Colgate freshman keeper Alex Baker for the 1-0 lead. Graduate student Erin Parsons (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa) also earned an assist on the play.
SU (11-6-0 overall, 3-3-0 BIG EAST)would increase its lead when Reich found Scalzo, who beat Baker far post at 19:53 for the 2-0 score. Sophomore midfielder Erica Mastrogiacomo (Weymouth, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) began the play with a long run from deep in the Colgate offensive zone.
The Red Raiders (6-6-3, 2-3-1 Patriot League) were limited to one shot in the first half.
Freshman Natalie Galas (Sterling Heights, Mich./Bishop Foley) made the score 3-0 at 51:19 when she put home a rebounded shot from sophomore midfielder Anne-Marie Lapalme (Granby, Quebec/John Abbott Prep /Mercer). Scalzo would complete the scoring in the 60th minute when she flicked a pass from senior Molly Schmelzle (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) past Baker.
Baker made four saves in her first collegiate appearance. SU freshman keeper Shannon Myers (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) made one save and posted her second consecutive shutout. Scalzo ends the regular season as the team leader in goals (11) and points (25). The 25 points is the most by an SU player since 1998 when Erin O'Grady scored 38 points.
It was also the last home game for Schmelzle, Parsons, Reich and senior co-captain Tracy Stalker (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus). Reich ranks second on the all-time goals list at SU with 27 and is tied for second on the career points list with 74.
Whether or not Syracuse's season continues depends on a tournament bid from either the ECAC or NCAA.
