Four Orangemen Headline Academic Football Squad

Fullback Kyle Johnson (Woodbridge, NJ) made the team as well as sophomores Nick Romeo (Palm Harbor, FL), Rich Scanlon (Orangeburg, NY) and Josh Thomas (Orchard Park, NY).
Johnson, a team captain, is currently pursuing a master's in business administration. With 185 yards, Johnson is SU's third leading rusher this season. Romeo, a mechanical engineering major, has started every game at center this season. Scanlon, a linebacker with 50 tackles this year, is an exercise science major. Thomas, psychology major and defensive end, has 39 tackles in 2001.
With four Orangemen on the team, Syracuse tied Albany for the most representation on the District I squad.
The four Orangemen will now be placed on a national ballot and the results of the voting for the 2001 Verizon Academic Team will be announced Dec. 10, 2001.
To be nominated a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore starter or significant reserve on his team with a 3.20 cumulative grade point average. The District I team is compiled from NCAA Division I football teams from Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont.
