
SU Defeats Cal State Northridge, 80-57

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Senior forward Jazmine Wright (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) recorded her first career double-double with 20 points and a career-best 13 rebounds to lead the Syracuse women's basketball team to an 80-57 victory at Cal State Northridge (0-1) on Nov. 19. Wright hit eight of her 13 shot attempts as the Orangewomen improved to 2-0 on their season-opening California road trip.
Wright scored the first basket of the game, giving the Orangewomen a lead they would never relinquish. Syracuse opened up a 29-15 lead with 6:46 left in the half, and went into halftime with a 43-28 advantage. The Orangewomen built their first-half lead at the free throw line, converting on 16-of-18 attempts, including five by sophomore Shannon Perry (Providence, R.I./LaSalle) and four by sophomore point guard Julie McBride (Mechanicville, N.Y./Catholic Central).
The Matadors cut the lead to nine, scoring eight of the first 10 points of the second half. The Orangewomen then went on a 17-0 run to put the game out of reach. Wright contributed more than half the points during the run, scoring nine and adding an assist.
Four other players scored in double figures for the Orangewomen. Senior Leaf Newman (Perris, Calif./Perris) hit for 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while McBride also scored 14 points with five assists. Perry scored in double figures off the bench for the second straight game, tallying 11 points and four steals in 15 minutes of work. Sophomore center Chineze Nwagbo (Lanham-Seabrook, Md./Duval Senior) scored a career-high 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Nwagbo also had a career-best three blocked shots.
The Syracuse defense forced the Matadors into 30 turnovers and held them to 28 percent (17-for-61) shooting. The Orangewomen outrebounded Northridge, 47-42. Ebony David led CSN with 14 points. Denise Cardenas set a school record with 16 three-point attempts.
The Orangewomen finish their three-game road trip on Wednesday, Nov. 21 at Pepperdine. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. EST. Syracuse plays its first home game on Sunday, Nov. 25 versus Michigan at 2 p.m. in Manley Field House.
