Swim Teams in Eighth Place After First Night of the Nike Cup

After the first night of competition Thursday at the 2001 UNC Nike Cup, the Syracuse University men's and women's swimming teams were each in eighth place. The University of North Carolina led the women's standings with 296 points and paced the men's field with 312 points.
Sophomore Elyse McDonough (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) was Syracuse's top finisher in the women's 200 individual medley. She finished eighth out of 21 swimmers in the event and nearly broke a school record with a time of 2:06.52. The SU record in the 200 IM is 2:06.00, set by All-American Robin Butler in 1979. McDonough was fourth in the "B" final.
McDonough teamed with fellow sophomore Megan Daney (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock) and freshmen Lisa Fong (Olympia, Wash./Olympia) and Sarah Reed (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) to claim 12th place in the 200 freestyle relay on Thursday night. The four swam the event in a time of 1:40.17.
Competition will continue on Friday morning with preliminary races. Finals are held in the evening.
