Swim Teams Finish Eighth at Prestigious Nike Cup Invitational

Led by sophomores Annie Tudryn (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) and Elyse McDonough (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) who each posted fourth-place finishes in their best events Saturday night, the Syracuse women's swimming team finished eighth at the prestigious Nike Cup Invitational held at the University of North Carolina, Nov. 15-17. The Orangewomen totalled 172 points over the course of the three-day event. The Orangemen also finished eighth. They finished the weekend with 39 points.
The host Tar Heels captured first place on both the men's and women's sides, with 875 and 874 points, respectively.
Tudryn, who was third in the 200 breaststroke at the Nike Cup a season ago, finished fourth this year with a time of 2:19.71. McDonough was 28 tenths of a second off her personal-best and school-record time in the 200 butterfly. She captured fourth place in the event with a time of 2:03.78.
Also on Saturday night, freshman Gustavo Kertzscher (Skurup, Sweden/Österportskolan) was eighth in the men's 200 backstroke with a time of 1:52.30. Senior Djordje Filipovic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) finished 11th in the 200 butterfly (1:54.02).
The Orangemen and Orangewomen return home for their next dual meet on November 30 and December 1st against the University of Massachusetts.
