
McBride Scores Nineteen In 76-58 Loss to No. 25 South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Sophomore guard Julie McBride (Mechanicville, N.Y./Catholic Central) scored 19 points, including 14 in the second half, and had a season-high eight assists, but the Syracuse women's basketball team lost its third straight game, 76-58, at 25th-ranked South Carolina on Sunday, Dec. 2. Syracuse is now 3-3 on the season, while the Lady Gamecocks improve to 6-1.
South Carolina scored the first 11 points of the game, holding the Orangewomen scoreless for the first six minutes. Senior guard Jaime James (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) tallied SU's first points with a jumper with 13:54 remaining in the first half. South Carolina took its biggest lead of the first half with 24 seconds left before halftime. Linda Hoglund hit the last of five first-half three pointers for the Lady Gamecocks to put them up 43-18. It was SU's largest halftime deficit of the season.
Syracuse got back into the game after intermission, outscoring USC, 30-15, during the first 11:14 of the second half to pull within seven at 58-51. The Orangewomen came alive from the outside during the run, hitting six three-point field goals. SU made a season-best nine triples in the game, including three by McBride, three by James and two by junior forward Leaf Newman (Perris, Calif./Perris). The Lady Gamecocks built their lead back into double digits, finishing the game on a 18-7 run.
For McBride, it was the ninth consecutive game she scored in double figures, dating back to last season. James also hit for double figures, scoring 15 points and adding a team-high seven rebounds. Newman contributed 12 points and three rebounds.
Shaunzinski Gordon scored a game-high 20 points, including four three-pointers, and scored her 1,000th career point. Jocelyn Penn shot 6-for-9 from the floor and scored 15 points. Teresa Geter led all players with eight rebounds. Syracuse native Kelly Morrone scored three points, grabbed two rebounds and had three assists for the Lady Gamecocks.
USC shot .545 (30-for-55) for the game, while the Orangewomen converted on .389 (21-for-54) of their field goal opportunites. South Carolina also held a 39-21 advantage on the boards.
Syracuse opens BIG EAST play on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at Seton Hall. The Orangewomen's next home game is Friday, Dec. 7 versus St. Bonaventure.
