
Orangewomen Win Third Straight, 78-66, Versus Harvard

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse sophomore center Chineze Nwagbo (Lanham-Seabrook, Md./Duval Senior) notched her second double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds as the women’s basketball team defeated Harvard, 78-66, on Thursday, Dec. 20 at Manley Field House. The Orangewomen extended their winning streak to three and improved to 6-3 on the season with the win. The Crimson are now 6-4.
The Orangewomen led 35-29 at halftime behind 10 points from Nwagbo on 5-of-8 shooting from the field. Six of Harvard’s 10 field goals in the half came from three-point range.
Harvard opened the second half with a 15-5 run to take a 44-40 lead with 14:52 remaining in the game. Five different Crimson scored during the run, with six points coming from sophomore forward Hana Peljto.
Led by senior forward Jazmine Wright (South Orange, N.J./Columbia), SU went on a 12-4 run to take a 52-48 lead at the 9:03 mark. From there, the Orangewomen were able to hold off Harvard down the stretch, connecting on 8-of-10 free throws in the last 1:42. Wright had four steals, two rebounds and 12 of her team-high 18 points in the second half.
Four Orangewomen scored in double figures. In addition to Wright and Nwagbo, sophomore guard Julie McBride (Mechanicville, N.Y./Catholic Central) finished with 16 points and senior guard Jaime James (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) had 11 points.
Peljto led the Crimson with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Reka Cserny also scored in double figures with 12 points.
Syracuse returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 30, for a 2 p.m. showdown with Vermont at Manley Field House. The game was changed from its original date of Saturday, Dec. 29.
