
Orangemen Close Out 2001 With 83-62 Victory Against Buffalo

SYRACUSE, NY - Four players in double figures led the Orangemen to a 83-62 victory against Buffalo on Sunday night in the Carrier Dome. Syracuse extended its record to 11-2, while the Bulls? record slipped to 6-5.
SU jumped out to a 23-12 lead, thanks in part to a 10-2 run by the Orange that was capped by two three-pointers by junior DeShaun Williams. A third three by Williams gave Syracuse a 14-point lead, 38-24, with 1:03 left in the half. Williams and senior Preston Shumpert each scored 11 points in the first half as SU entered intermission with a 40-27 lead.
Buffalo came within 12 points of Syracuse on two occasions in the second half -- at 53-41 and again at 68-56 -- but the Orange erupted for nine unanswered points to regain control, 77-56. Junior Kueth Duany scored 16 points in the game, including 12 in the second half.
The Orangemen shot 55 percent (35-of-63) from the field, compared to the Bulls? 22-of-56 (39 percent) shooting. Shumpert led the team with 22 points and seven rebounds, and freshman Hakim Warrick joined him in double figures with 10 points. James Thues dished out seven assists and chipped in six points.
Syracuse begins BIG EAST Conference play on Wednesday, Jan. 2 against Rutgers in the Carrier Dome at 7 p.m.
