Syracuse Volleyball Announces Team Awards

Fiume, an All-BIG EAST First-Team honoree, broke five career records during the course of the season. Fiume became the all-time kills (1,698) and kills per game (4.27) leader, as well as shattering the attempts (4,185), attempts per game (8.90) and block assists marks (295). She was a three-time BIG EAST Player of the Week selection, finishing the season with 534 kills, two shy of her own school single-season kills mark, and a school-record 4.27 kills per game average.
Munger had a potent season for the Orangewomen. She became one of the team’s top offensive weapons, recording 371 kills from the outside hitter spot. She averaged 3.37 kills per game and became an increased presence on the front line, averaging 0.52 blocks per game. She also bolstered the back-row defense, averaging 1.26 digs per game. One of the conference’s most efficient hitters, Munger finished 10th in the BIG EAST, killing 27 of her attempts.
The Alexis Tsairis Memorial Award is given in memory of the SU volleyball player who was aboard Pan Am Flight 103, which exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland on December 21, 1988. The award is given to the leading defensive player on the team. Stokes led the squad with 252 digs and 56 service aces. She posted a 2.05 digs per game mark in 2000. She finished eighth in school history with 716 career digs.
Nicholson won the The Abbie Bigelow Award for the second consecutive season. It is given to the player who exhibits courage and desire to excel on and off the court. A co-captain, Nicholson battled chronic knee problems throughout the 2000 season. She recorded 192 kills, splitting time between outside hitter and middle blocker. She was third on the team with 89 blocks and a 0.86 blocks per game average.
The Verhulst Sportswoman of the Year Award is voted on by the team and awarded to the most valuable person on and off the court. She posted 1,102 assists, averaging 10.20 per game and was one of four Orangewomen to have more than 200 digs. She broke the school’s all-time assists record in the final match of the season and has 3,842 helpers going into next season. In addition, Carroll was named to the Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-District team this fall.
The volleyball team was 24-10 this season and finished fifth in the BIG EAST with a 6-4 record.
