The Jayhawks led from start to finish but not without a couple of scares from the Orangemen. With Kansas ahead 30-13 and the game on the verge of becoming a blowout, SU strung together a 21-9 run paced by 10 points from DeShaun Williams and seven from Preston Shumpert. The run pulled SU within five points at the intermission.
Despite the efforts of Williams and Shumpert, who each finished with 20 points, the Jayhawks proved too much to handle. A 28-10 Kansas stretch put the game out of reach.
The Orangemen were outrebounded 56-23 in the loss and shot just 30.4 percent from the field. Meanwhile Kansas canned 55.8 percent of its attempts, including a 50 percent mark from the three-point stripe.
Syracuse did force 20 Jayhawk turnovers but the effort was not enough to halt the largest margin of defeat for SU in its NCAA tournament history.
