Tirico Wins 2001 Big East Conference Media Award

Tirico is believed to be the only broadcaster to have covered the league’s men’s basketball tournament as a member of the student media, a local market and national media. Tirico called SU men’s basketball games for WAER as an undergraduate before covering SU athletics as a sportscaster at WTVH-TV5 in Syracuse. He just completed play-by-play coverage of the conference tournament for the fourth consecutive year for ESPN. He joined the all-sports network in 1991.
Past winners of the award include Bill Raftery, ESPN (1996); Dick Weiss, NY Daily News (1997); Doug Logan, former SU play-by-play announcer, and Rich Chvotkin, Georgetown play-by-play announcer (1998), Jim O’Connell, Associated Press (1999); Phil Chardis, Manchester Journal Inquirer (2000).
