Syracuse Hands Top-Ranked Princeton Its First Loss of the Season In Men's Lacrosse
3/24/2001 9:49:57 AM | Men's Lacrosse
The game was attended by 10,924 spectators, the largest crowd at the Carrier Dome for mens lacrosse this season and the ninth-largest regular-season crowd at the Dome ever. With the 10,000+ fans that packed the Carrier Dome for the Virginia game on March 3, and todays attendance total, it marked only the second time that SU has had more than 10,000 fans at two regular-season home games in the same season.
Syracuse (4-1) took a 4-1 lead in the first quarter as four different players scored. The Orangemen never trailed in the contest. Sophomore attackman Michael Springer (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) struck first off a feed from Powell at the 9:13 mark of the first quarter. Coffman then added an unassisted marker a little more than a minute later. Junior midfielder Brian Solliday (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) fired in a shot to give SU a 3-0 lead at the 6:28 mark before Princetons Brad Dumont got the Tigers on the board with an unassisted tally at the 5:53 mark. Freshman midfielder Steve Vallone (Corning, NY/Corning East) registered his first career goal off an assist by classmate Sean Lindsay (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Lakeland-Panas) with 1:48 remaining in the opening period. That gave Syracuse its 4-1 lead.
Both teams recorded two goals apiece in the second quarter. The Orangemen got two from Coffman to go ahead, 6-1, but Owen Dalya nd Sean Hartofilis answered for the Tigers to cut the score to 6-3 at halftime. Hartofilis netted his second goal of the game at the 11:17 mark of the third quarter, which put the Tigers as close as they would come the rest of the afternoon (6-4). However, SU went on a 5-0 run to take its largest lead of the game (11-4) with 4:19 left in the third. Powell was responsible for two of the Orange goals, while Springer, Solliday and junior attackman Liam Banks (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) also got in on the action. Banks added two assists in the period and finished with a season-high four points (one goal, three assists).
Princeton (3-1) battled back to within three goals (11-8) with 9:41 left to play. Matt Bailer, Ryan Boyle and B.J. Prager all tallied goals. Powell notched his third goal of the game and 10th goal of the season with 8:42 remaining in the match. Senior midfielder Chris Cercy (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage), who won 14 of 24 faceoffs for SU, scored his first goal of the season with 8:05 showing on the clock. Sophomore midfielder Bill Perritt (Holtsville, NY/Sachem) closed out SUs scoring with his first career goal at the 1:01 mark of the fourth quarter. Fifth-year senior goaltender Rob Mulligan (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) had 13 saves on the day, which makes him just the sixth goalie at Syracuse since 1967 to record more than 500 career saves. He is sixth on the schools all-time saves list with 508 stops. Jamie Molloy (1977-80) is tops on the list with 766 saves.
The Orangemen play host to Brown next Saturday, March 31 at 2:30 p.m.
