Senior Josko Vucetic (Split, Croatia) was selected by his teammates as the recipient of the Jon R. Buzzard Award, which goes to the MVP of the men’s team. Vucetic earned his first All-American honors this season in the 100 and 200 backstroke events. He finished 13th in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:45.14 at the 2001 NCAA Championships, held March 22-24, in College Station, TX. His time of 48.05 in the 100 backstroke at NCAAs earned him All-American status in that event. He became the first swimmer to earn All-American laurels since his brother, Miroslav Vucetic, earned four All-American nods from 1995-98. Josko Vucetic was also the 2001 BIG EAST Champion in the 100 and 200 backstroke events.
Junior Kelly Bryon (Uxbridge, Ontario) received the most votes for this year’s Lucille Verhulst Award, the distinction that is given to the MVP of the women’s team. Bryon competed in the distance freestyle and individual medley events for Syracuse because of her versatility and consistency.
Taking home the Pat & Bob Barlow Award for academic and athletic excellence were sophomore Jennifer Jonusaitis (Sault St. Marie, Ontario) and senior Dave Hanthorn (Manheim, PA).
First-year swimmers Annie Tudryn (Springfield, MA) and Spencer Raymond (Idstein, Germany) earned the team’s Rookie of the Year awards. Tudryn posted NCAA-consideration times in the 100 (1:04.15) and 200 breaststroke (2:16.33) events this season. Raymond had a strong showing at the 2001 BIG EAST Championship in the spint freestyle events and was a member of SU’s 200 (1:30.02) and 400 (3:17.27) medley relay squads that recorded NCAA-consideration times.
