Griffin scored 17 of his points in the two extra sessions and played all 50 minutes of the game.
Preston Shumpert had 20 points and eight rebounds before fouling out in the final minute, Damone Brown had 20 points, including 15 in the first half, and Kueth Duany had a team-high nine rebounds to go with 10 points.
The Orangemen appeared to have the game under control when its second-half lead stretched to 11 points, 65-54. The host Red Storm roared back and, thanks to a four-point play by Willie Shaw with 39 seconds left, forced the game into overtime.
St. Johns grabbed an early four-point lead in the first extra session but Griffin went to work, scoring all eight of Syracuses points in the initial overtime, including a free throw that forced a second overtime. He opened that period with two free throws and the Orangemen never trailed again.
Syracuse converted 39 of its 48 free throws (.813) while St. Johns made just 23-of-25 (.511).
