For the Orangemen, the win avenged last season's 13-12 loss to Cornell in Ithaca. It was their only loss of the 2000 season.
The two teams combined for eight goals in the first quarter, with SU owning a 5-3 edge. Coffman and junior midfielder Tom Hardy (Tully, NY/Tully) scored to give the Orangemen a 2-0 lead. The Big Red tied the game at 2-2 with goals by David Key and Andrew Schardt. SU then closed out the quarter by scoring three of the last four goals, including an extra-man marker by sophomore attackman Michael Springer (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) and unassisted goals by junior attackman Liam Banks (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) and Coffman.
Coffman's two goals to start the second quarter gave Syracuse a four-goal cushion (7-3) at the 11:16 mark. Andrew Collins and Galen Beers registered back-to-back goals in a matter of 30 seconds to get Cornell to within 7-5 with 9:25 left in the first half. Banks scored on a feed from first-year attackman Michael Powell (Carthage, NY/Carthage) and SU headed to the lockerroom with an 8-5 advantage.
Powell had two goals and an assist in the third quarter to stretch the Orangemen's lead to 12-7. His third goal of the night gave Syracuse its largest margin of the game (13-7) with 12:14 remaining in the fourth quarter.
J.P. Schalk, Michael Egan and Beers all recorded goals in the fourth quarter to help Cornell chip away. Beers notched the contest's final goal with 58 seconds remaining in regulation.
Syracuse goalie Rob Mulligan (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) and Cornell netminder Justin Cynar each finished with 10 saves. The Orangemen wound up winning 17 of 25 faceoffs. The Big Red were three-of-three on the EMO, while Syracuse was two-of-seven.
Cornell's record is 5-3, while Syracuse improved to 6-2. The Orangemen host No. 19-ranked Rutgers on Saturday, April 14 at 2:30 p.m., the second game of a doubleheader with the women's lacrosse team. The Orangewomen play host to Boston College on Saturday beginning at noon.
