Holowich drove in the only run of the game in the opener with a ninth-inning triple, leading SU to a 1-0 win, while Bieman broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the eighth in the nightcap with an RBI single to give the Orangewomen a 2-1 win.
Syracuse had opportunities to win the opener in regulation, but the Orangewomen stranded 10 runners. SU left the bases loaded in the sixth and had two runners in scoring position in the eighth, but failed to score until the ninth. Senior Shanna Newell (Fort Edward, NY) led off the inning with a single, but was still on first two outs later. Holowich then delivered the key hit lining a triple over the Siena leftfielder's head.
Junior pitcher Heather Brown (Bloomfield, NM) continued her string of strong performances, tossing her fourth complete-game shutout of the season. Brown struck out 13 batters and allowed only one hit in nine innings. It was her second one-hitter of the season. She is now 5-9 on the season, allowing just four earned runs in her last 34 innings of work.
Newell led the offense with three singles. It was the first three-hit game of her career. Holowich and sophomore Kristen Collins (Stow, MA) each had two hits, while freshman Ceci Durazo (San Diego, CA) picked up her first career hit with a pinch hit single.
Siena's Allison Clark suffered the loss, dropping to 4-9 on the season. She struck out two and walked two in 8.2 innings of work. Carrie Getz had the Saints only hit with a bunt single in the sixth inning.
It was Bieman's turn to be the hero in game two. Sophomore Jackie Herrman (Warren, OH) started the eighth inning with a perfectly placed triple down the right-field line. Bieman then delivered a single up the middle through the drawn in infield to give SU the 2-1 victory.
SU took a 1-0 lead with a run in the second inning. Freshman Jaime Grillo (Brentwood, NY) started the rally with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Newell then grounded to shortstop, but the throw to first was too high to handle and Grillo was able to score on the play.
Siena wasted no time in coming back, plating their lone run in the top of the third. Veronica Arredondo drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice. Another sacrifice moved her to third, and she scored when Mary Buckheit delivered a single to right.
Herrman paced the SU offense with three hits in the game, while Bieman added two hits. Holowich and Newell continued their hot hitting with a hit each. Collins and junior Becky Snyder (Wilkes-Barre, PA) also added singles. Syracuse's 10 hits were the second-most in a game for the Orangewomen this season and the largest total since racking up 11 hits in the season-opener versus Northern Illinois.
Sophomore Tara DiMaggio (Hopewell Junction, NY) went the distance, improving her record to 4-8. She scattered five singles and struck out nine in eight innings of work.
Jodie Fiacco was the loser. She is now 3-7 for the season after allowing two runs on 10 hits and striking out one in seven-plus innings of work.
The Orangewomen get back into BIG EAST play this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders. The Orangewomen are at Providence on Saturday, April 21 and at Boston College on Sunday, April 22. Siena is at Canisius on Saturday and at Niagara on Sunday.
