Sophomore attackman Michael Springer (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) led SU with four goals. He also had an assist to tie junior midfielder Josh Coffman (Carthage, NY/Carthage) as the game's leading scorer. Coffman's five points came off of three goals and two assists.
Springer's first goal of the game, at the 10:28 mark of the first quarter, put the Orangemen ahead, 2-1, and represented the 100th point of his career. He is the third SU player to reach the century mark in career points this season. Coffman and classmate Liam Banks (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) achieved the milestone earlier this month. For Springer, it marked the sixth game this season and 19th of his career where he has tallied four or more points (out of 26 career games). He is averaging 4.00 points per game for his career.
SU led 5-2 after the first quarter and then built a 9-2 lead by scoring the first four goals of the second period. Penn's Peter Scott registered the third goal for his team with 3:39 remaining in the first half. Syracuse held an 11-3 halftime advantage.
Freshman attackman Michael Powell (Carthage, NY/Carthage) set up two of Springer's goals in the third quarter. Coffman and sophomore midfielder Pat Hogan (St. Louis, MO/DeSmet Jesuit) also found the back of the net as the Orangemen outscored the Quakers, 4-1, in the third quarter. Alex Kopicki recorded his team-high second goal of the contest at the 4:59 mark to cut SU's lead to 13-4.
Syracuse took its largest lead of the game (17-4) when freshman attackman Brian Nee (Cockeysville, MD/Boys' Latin) notched his 13th goal of the season off a pass from senior attackman Pat Kennedy (Cincinnati, OH/Moeller) at the 8:13 mark of the fourth quarter.
One of Pennsylvania's top players, Kevin Cadin, was held without a point until 6:57 of the fourth quarter. He scored an unassisted goal to make the score 17-5, but in the process, went down with a knee injury. Adam Solow tallied Penn's sixth and final goal of the game at 5:13 and SU senior attackman Joe Russell (Ballston Lake, NY/Shaker) received credit for his first goal of the season with 2:22 remaining in the game.
All in all, four seniors scored for Syracuse on Senior Day. Fifth-year senior goaltender Rob Mulligan (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) played the first 41 minutes of the game and came out to a standing ovation during his final game at the Carrier Dome where he totalled six saves and allowed four goals.
Pennsylvania goalie Ryan Kelly finished with 19 saves, the most stops that any goaltender has made against the Orangemen this season.
The Quakers are now 6-5 on the season.
Syracuse takes to the road for its final three games of the regular season. On Tuesday, April 24, the Orangemen are at Hobart for a 4:30 faceoff. On Saturday, April 28, they travel to nationally-ranked Massachusetts (9-1) for a 1 p.m. start. SU's regular season ends May 5 at Georgetown (10-1).
