The first game of the twin bill was a pitchers' duel as neither team could push a run home until Notre Dame scored in the top half of the fifth. A single by Danielle Klayman drove in the game's first run, which proved to be all the Irish would need. Notre Dame added one more in the sixth inning on an RBI double by Andria Bledsoe, and then plated four runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach. Jenny Kriech, Melanie Alkire, Lizzy Lemire and Bledsoe all drove in runs in the inning.
Preseason BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year Jen Sharron was the winner for Notre Dame. Sharron is now 17-2 after scattering five hits and striking out nine in the complete game.
Syracuse's Heather Brown (Bloomfield, NM) suffered the loss, dropping her record to 2-8. She went the distance, allowing 11 hits and striking out four.
Five Syracuse players each had one hit, including sophomore Lindsay Richards' (Burr Ridge, IL) first double of the season.
The second game proved to be much of the same for the Syracuse offense. Freshman pitcher Kristin Schmidt improved to 15-1 on the season for Notre Dame, allowing only one hit and striking out nine.
Junior Becky Snyder (Wilkes-Barre, PA) broke up the no-hitter in the bottom of the fifth with a leadoff bunt single. It was Snyder's first hit of the season in just her second at-bat of 2001.
Notre Dame got on the board first with three runs in the top of the second inning. Lemire hit a two-run home run and Kreich drove in another with an RBI single to put the Irish ahead for good. Notre Dame added a single run in the third on an RBI double by Andrea Loman, and then tacked on two more in the fifth thanks to run-scoring singles by Kas Hoag and Lisa Mattison.
Tara DiMaggio suffered the loss despite throwing only an inning and two-thirds. She allowed three runs on four hits and struck out two before moving to shortstop after an injury forced Richards out of the game. DiMaggio is now 2-6 on the season. Senior Missy Bieman (Wingham, Ontario) came on in relief, allowing just one earned run in five and one-third innings. She gave up 11 hits without a strikeout or walk.
The Orangewomen take a break from BIG EAST play when the Colgate Red Raiders visit Syracuse for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 10. The first game gets underway at 6 p.m.
