The Syracuse Orangewomen used four second-half goals to collect their season-opening win against the University at Albany, 4-0, on Wednesday night at Coyne Field. Junior midfielder Kristin Aronowicz (Exton, PA/Downingtown) netted two goals during the second-half surge.
The two teams played to a 0-0 score during the first 35 minutes. In that stretch, SU outshot Albany, 7-2 and had five penalty cornes to Albany's two. One of the Great Danes' early opportunities in the game was a breakaway, but it was quickly squelched by SU's All-American goalkeeper Audrey Latsko (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus), a junior.
Red-shirt freshman Ann-Marie Guglieri (Carmel, NY/Carmel) tallied the game's first goal (and the first of her career) at the 33:07 mark of the second half. She redirected junior midfielder Michelle Marks’ (Lititz, PA/Warwick) long hit into the Albany cage with a slice shot.
Aronowicz gave the Orangewomen a 2-0 lead by banging in her own rebound following a broken penalty corner opportunity. Her initial shot was saved, but she followed it up and found the back of the cage at the 29:35 mark.
A little more than eight minutes later, Aronowicz struck again, this time she carried the ball in on her stick and slapped it past Elaine Sullivan, the Albany goalkeeper.
First-year forward Meredith Gettel (Rehrersburg, PA/Tulpehocken) capped off SU's scoring run with her first collegiate goal at the 13:35 mark.
Latsko finished with three saves, while Sullivan had seven. For the game, the Orangewomen outshot the Great Danes, 16-4.
