Syracuse Defeats Fairfield in Final Match of Orange Invitational

SYRACUSE, NY - Freshman Laura Koster (Houston, TX) recorded team-highs in kills, service aces and blocks as the Syracuse University women’s volleyball team defeated Fairfield, 3-2, on Sat., Sept. 1 at Manley Field House in the final match of the Orange Invitational Tournament. The Orangewomen lost to Northeastern, 3-2, in their first match of the day.
Koster was named to the all-tournament team after posting 21 kills, five service aces and eight total blocks in the win over Fairfield.Freshman Ashley Kimes (Overland Park, KS) and juinor Abby Van Mater (West Chester, PA) joined Koster in double-figures with 15 kills each, a new career high for Van Mater, while freshman Rachel Crooks (Green Springs, OH) recorded her second double-double of the day with 10 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore Christen Casey (Long Beach, IN) led the defense with 13 digs, and senior Noreen Carroll (La Grange, IL) dished out 55 assists and posted six total blocks.
Syracuse won the first game against Northeastern, 30-24, but fell in the fifth and deciding game, 10-15. Senior Jing Jing Wang (Beijing, China) recorded a career-high 13 digs in the loss. Koster led all attackers with 23 kills. Crooks posted a double-double with 14 kills and 16 digs, and freshman Morgan Jones (Malad, ID) recorded 12 kills.
Members of the all-tournament team include: Kent State’s Chantel Vineyard and Sarah Kutschinski, Northeastern’s Lindsay Wagner and Fairfield’s Joanne Saunders and Carola Stowe. Kent State’s Stephanie Doran was named the MVP of the Orange Invitational.
In other tournament action, Kent State (3-0) defeated Albany, 3-0, and Northeastern, 3-1. Fairfield beat Albany, 3-0.
Syracuse’s next competition is the Auburn University Tournament in Auburn, AL. The Orangewomen open play on Sept. 8 with two matches. They face Charlotte at 10 a.m. and Auburn at 7 p.m.
