For the second game this season, the Syracuse field hockey team waited until the second half to get on the scoreboard. The Orangewomen's penalty-corner unit connected on two-of-three attempts in the second stanza to give SU a 2-0 victory against Miami (OH) Sunday at Coyne Field. The defense did not allow the RedHawks a single shot on goal for the entire game.
Syracuse (2-0) dominated possession of the ball in the first half, but could not put the ball in the cage. The Orangewomen outshot the RedHawks 7-0 in the opening period and 13-0 for the game.
Senior forward Michelle Aronowicz (Exton, PA/Downingtown), who was active the entire day and led all players with five shots, scored the first Syracuse goal with 29:10 remaining in the game. She pushed in a pass that was sent to her out wide by junior sweeper Missy Grosman (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus). It was Michelle Aronowicz's first goal of the season and 25th of her career.
Junior midfielder Kristin Aronowicz (Exton, PA/Downingtown) fired in a shot from the top of the circle off a penalty corner at the 9:41 mark. She was assisted by her sister, Michelle, and by freshman forward Ann-Marie Guglieri (Carmel, NY/Carmel). It was Kristin Aronowicz's team-high third goal of this young season and 19th of her career.
Junior goaltender Audrey Latsko (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) was untested as the SU defense kept the Miami shooters at bay all afternoon. Latsko received credit for her second shutout of the season and 10th of her career.
Miami's Marie Vaughn played the game's first 67 minutes in goal before being replaced by Kerri Orr. Vaughn had six saves and allowed both SU goals.
It marked the first loss of the season for the RedHawks who are now 2-1.
Syracuse faces two tough challenges next weekend with games against Princeton and Northeastern in Princeton, NJ. The Orangewomen meet the Tigers on Saturday, Sept. 8, at 1 p.m. They take on the Huskies the very next day at the same time.
