Syracuse sophomore forward Nina Scalzo (Webster, NY,/Webster) opened the scoring at 14:41 when she chipped the ball from 10 yards out over Lobo goalkeeper Shelly Hammock. Senior co-captain Candy Reich (Pambroke, Mass./Silver Lake Regional) and freshman defender Sarah Elnicky (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) picked up assists on the play. It was Elnicky's first collegiate point.
The Orange offense controlled the ball for most of the first half and narrowly missed on several scoring opportunities, while the defense did not allow a Lobo shot until after halftime.
Syracuse freshman forward Natalie Galas (Sterling Heights, Mich./Bishop Foley) scored her first collegiate goal when she rebounded a shot by Erin Parsons (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) less than five minutes after intermission. The goal would prove to be the game-winner.
New Mexico cut the deficit to 2-1, when Camille Bremer broke free from the Syracuse defense and shot past SU freshman keeper Shannon Myers (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) in the 68th minute. Scalzo would score her second goal when she rebounded a shot by freshman Anne-Marie Lapalme (Granby, QC/John Abbott Prep) at 81:04. It was Scalzo's third career two-goal game. Junior forward Annie Turner (Littleton, Colo./Colorado Academy) was credited with an assist on the play.
Sophomore midfielder Megan Huez (Chesterfield, Mo./St. Joseph's) closed out the scoring for SU with 25 seconds remaining in the game when she took a pass from Turner and beat Hammock to the near post.
Myers picked up her first collegiate win and made three saves. Hammock stopped eight shots for the Lobos.
Syracuse will travel next to play interstate rival Buffalo on Monday, Sept. 3. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
