SYRACUSE, NY - The Syracuse University women’s volleyball team returns to its home court this weekend to face two BIG EAST opponents. On Friday, Sept. 28., SU plays Georgetown at 7 p.m. at Manley Field House and then returns to meet Virginia Tech on Sunday, Sept. 30 at 2 p.m. The series between the Orangewomen and the Hoyas is tied at 14-14 with Georgetown taking last year’s match, 3-1. The Hokies hold a 1-0 lead in the series against Syracuse.
Syracuse (5-5, 0-1 BIG EAST) looks to snap a two-match losing streak and move up in The BIG EAST Conference standings. SU lost six straight games on the road last weekend with 3-0 losses to No. 24-ranked Notre Dame and Valparaiso. The loss versus Notre Dame dropped the Orangewomen to 0-1 in BIG EAST play.
One of the positive notes of the weekend was the return of senior co-captain Carol Munger (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua). Munger was rehabbing a knee injury suffered earlier in the year. She had six kills and a team-high nine digs in the match versus Notre Dame. Freshmen Rachel Crooks (Green Springs, OH/Clyde) and Laura Koster (Houston, TX/Westfield) led the SU offense with 14 kills each in the two combined matches.
Led by BIG EAST Player of the Week Yulia Vtyurina, Georgetown (5-4, 2-0 BIG EAST) has won three consecutive matches, including two against BIG EAST opponents. Senior Vtyurina posted two double-doubles last week and is second in the conference with 4.74 kills per game.
Virginia Tech (3-7, 0-2 BIG EAST) is also looking for its first BIG EAST win after losing to St. John’s, 3-2, and Seton Hall, 3-1, last weekend. Freshman Annie Spicer registered double-doubles in three consecutive matches last week, including 18 kills and 18 digs against Seton Hall. Spicer leads the Hokie offense, averaging 3.34 kills per game. Before facing Syracuse, Virginia Tech will play Notre Dame on Friday night.
