
Orangewomen Host Providence in First League Home Game

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse women's basketball team will play its first home conference game of the season when they host the Providence Friars at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12 in Manley Field House. The Orangewomen are 8-5 overall and 1-1 in the BIG EAST, while the Friars are 8-7 overall and 2-2 in league play.
The Orangewomen are coming off a thrilling 70-68 win at 25th-ranked Cincinnati on Jan. 8. Senior forward Jazmine Wright hit a 15-footer with one-tenth of a second remaining on the clock to seal the victory. SU had to overcome a 10-point deficit during the final 6:11 of the contest. Sophomore point guard Julie McBride scored a team-high 19 points in the win, while senior guard Jaime James and sophomore forward Shannon Perry each hit for 15 points.
McBride is leading the team, and is second in the BIG EAST, with a 16.8 points per game average. She also ranks fourth in the conference in assists, averaging 5.9 per game. James is second on the team, averaging 13.2 points per game. The senior is now only 67 points away from becoming the 14th Orangewoman to score 1,000 points in her career.
Perry, a Providence native, will be playing the second game of her career versus her hometown team. As a freshman in 1999-2000, Perry scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds in 30 minutes off the bench. She was a three-time Rhode Island Gatorade Player of the Year at LaSalle High School in Providence.
The Friars defeated Villanova, 62-45, on Jan. 9. Dani Trippany led Providence with 12 points and seven rebounds. She is the Friars' leading scorer, averaging 10.1 points per game and leading rebounder with a 6.3 per game average.
Providence leads the all-time series with the Orangewomen, 27-10. The Friars have taken the last two meetings, inlcuding a 79-74 win in Providence last season.
