In its final home meet of the season this Saturday at Ted Webster Pool, the Syracuse swimming and diving team will pay tribute to its five senior swimmers and a special friend of the program. The meet begins with diving at 9 a.m. and swims at noon.
The Orangemen and Orangewomen entertain West Virginia in the final home meet of the 2001-02 season. Syracuse is coming off a rigorous training session that took place in San Juan, Puerto Rico, January 2-12. In Puerto Rico, the Orange competed against Boston College, St. John's, Seton Hall and Yale. Syracuse came out on top against all four opponents.
Senior Tribute
The Syracuse swimming and diving program is honoring its five seniors on Saturday, January 19. It will be the last time they ever compete at Ted Webster Pool. The five seniors are: Glenn Bizewski, Djordje Filipovic, Chris Miller, Zack Posey and Stacy Wells.
Bizewski swam a season-best time of 2:20.12 in the 200 breaststroke at the Nike Cup in November.
Filipovic, the defending BIG EAST champion in the 100 and 200 butterfly and 200 individual medley, owns the team's fastest times this season in the 200 freestyle (1:45.18), the 100 butterfly (51.59), the 200 butterfly (1:53.02) and the 200 IM (1:54.08).
Miller rejoined the team this season after taking a hiatus in 2000-01. He has provided depth in the distance and freestyle events.
Posey's name appears on the team's top times list in the 400 freestyle relay and the 200 medley relay.
Wells is the lone senior on the women's team. She had a strong showing at the Nike Cup in November where she posted the squad's top time of the season in the 100 freestyle (54.07). In the 200 free, Wells finished in a time of 1:56.06, the second-fastest time on the team this season behind Ashley Danowski's 1:55.77 against Colgate. Wells was part of SU's fastest relay teams in the 400 frreestyle relay (3:36.75) and the 800 freestyle relay (7:45.69) at the Nike Cup.
The coaching staff also wants to recognize Natalie Pappas, who has sung the national anthem before home meets for the past two seasons.
The Series Against the Mountaineers
This will mark the fifth meeting between Syracuse and West Virginia in swimming and diving. The Orangewomen are 4-0 against the Mountaineers, while the men's series is in favor of SU, 3-1. Last season in Morgantown, the Mountaineers defeated the Orangemen, 164.5 - 115.5. The SU women posted a 153-134 victory in the dual meet.
