In the first meet of the season, the Syracuse women scored a 130-113 victory against St. Bonaventure, while the Orangemen were defeated 136-107 by the Bonnies, one of the top teams in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
Newcomers played a big role for Syracuse. Freshmen won seven different events. Making an impact on the women's side were first-year swimmers Lisa Wittich (St. Louis, Mo.) and Christina Jansen (Goleta, Calif.). They each won two events. Wittich captured first place in the 500 and 1,000 freestyle. Jansen won the 50 and 100 freestyle races.
Junior Elyse McDonough (Delmar, N.Y.) was her usual competitive self, winning the 200 IM in a time of 2:12.25. She finished first in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:07.27.
Sophomore Josh Scott (Clayton, Calif.) was the only multiple winner for the Orangemen. He won the 200 and 500 freestyle races. Rookies Pat Mugavin (Northport, N.Y.), Devon Ackroyd (Toronto, Ontario, Canada), and Rob Persico (Fulton, Md.) each enjoyed successful performances in their first collegiate swim meet. Mugavin won the 1,000 freestyle in a time of 10:04.20. Ackroyd was first in the 200 IM (1:58.03), while Persico captured first in the 200 backstroke (1:54.75). Mugavin was second in the 500 freestyle and third in the 200 butterfly.
Syracuse divers placed second in three events. On the women's three-meter board, freshman Erin Cofiell (Glastonbury, Conn.) was second with 242.63 points. Dewey Schultz, a freshman out of Sudbury, Massachusetts, was second on the men's one-meter board with 255.53 points. Classmate Tony Campagna (Liverpool, N.Y.) was second in the men's three-meter event with a score of 265.05 points.
The Orangemen and Orangewomen will next be in action on Saturday, Oct. 19, when they host Colgate in their first meet of the season at Ted Webster Pool. Diving begins at 9 a.m., while swimming is scheduled to start at noon.
