Freshman midfielder Greg Rommel (Syracuse, NY/Henninger) of the Syracuse University men's lacrosse team was named the co-recipient of The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame's Eastern Regional High School Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
For the first time in its history, the award was given to two recipients as the result of a tie. The award honors the nation's top high school scholar-athletes from each of the Foundation's four regions who have demonstrated outstanding academic application, superior football performance and exemplary school leadership and citizenship. Rommel will be honored for this award at the Foundation's Annual Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, December 10, 2002, at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City.
Rommel played football thoroughout his four years at Henninger High School in Syracuse. He won back-to-back championships as quarterback for the team. Rommel also played lacrosse for those four years. He was a four-time All-Central New York honoree and earned All-American status in 2002. He was Henninger?s offensive MVP and a three-time member of the Empire States Games Central team. His Empire team took home a gold medal in 1999.
At SU, Rommel recently concluded fall practice with the lacrosse team. He and his teammates will begin practice for the Spring 2003 season in January.
