THE GAME
- The two programs with the most wins all time in the sport are set to clash on Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field as No. 10 Syracuse continues its long road swing to face 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins for the 64th meeting all-time.
- Combining for over 2,000 wins between the programs, the Orange and the Blue Jays meet on Charles Street for the first time since 2022, head coach Gary Gait's first season at the helm of the men's program and his sixth overall game with this team.
- The Syracuse/Hopkins series is almost as close as close can be. The Orange have won 30 games while the Blue Jays have 32 victories on their ledger. The teams played to an even 4-4 final in the very first meeting back in April 1921.
- Syracuse has won the last two outings between the programs, clipping the Blue Jays 14-13 in Charlotte (2024) with a 13-10 win at the JMA Wireless Dome last spring. The Orange have the last winning streak of at least three games, picking up victories in 2013, 2014, and 2015.
- These two programs have met every year since 1983, excluding the 2021 season when Hopkins played a Big Ten only schedule following the COVID-19 Pandemic.
- Syracuse, now 4-2, bounced back on Sunday, nipping No. 19 Penn 9-8 in overtime after trailing 8-4 with less than five minutes to go in regulation play.
- The Blue Jays sit at 4-1 overall, rallying past another long-time rival, Virginia, to retain the Doyle Smith Cup.
- Syracuse and Hopkins share three opponents this season: Maryland, North Carolina, and Virginia. Syracuse is 1-0 against those three to date while the Blue Jays are split 1-1 with the Virginia win, but dropping the North Carolina game in Chapel Hill.
- Saturday's game will air live on ESPN+ at historic Homewood Field with Drew Carter and Quint Kessenich on the call. The game will reair on ESPNU Sunday, March 8 at 2 p.m.Â
- Kyle Fetterly will be alongside either Tim Leonard or Luke Burgess for the the Syracuse Sports Network on TK99/105 locally in Syracuse. Fans can also catch radio broadcasts on Cuse.com, The Varsity App, and TuneIn App. Syracuse student-radio WAER will be on hand in Baltimore as well with Alex Burstein and Ben Chadwick calling the game.
SHUTTING THE DOOR
- The Syracuse defense combined with a potent offense and a sharp faceoff has helped the Orange shut the door on opposing teams this season.
- Syracuse has kept opponents off the board for at least 15 minutes on five separate occasions so far this year, with the longest as a 23 minute, 4 second dought for Saint Joseph's in the second game of the year.
- Of those five droughts, three have come at the end of games. On Sunday as the Orange erased a four-goal, third-quarter deficit, Syracuse kept Penn off the board for the final 19:50 of the game. The final Quaker goal came with 4:14 left in the third quarter.
- The Orange defense has allowed just six goals in the fourth quarter of games this season, while scoring 17 times across the fourth quarter and into overtime.
- Syracuse has allowed the fewest fourth-quarter/overtime goals in the ACC so far this year at just six. Notre Dame is the only other team that has surrendered single-digit fourth quarter goals with nine in just four games. North Carolina has given up 15, Virginia 14, and Duke with 11 given up in the final frame.
A WIN ON SATURDAY WOULD...
- See the Orange extend their winning streak against Hopkins to three straight dating back to the 2024 meeting in Charlotte. Neither team has won more than two straight in this series since the Orange grabbed three in a row from 2013-2015.
- Be the 31st win in series history for Syracuse, just one behind the Blue Jays 32 wins.
- Improve Syracuse to 3-2 against Hopkins under head coach Gary Gait.
- See the Orange win their second game against a Big Ten team this season after topping Maryland 11-9.
- Level Syracuse's road record to 2-2 on the season and would be the second-straight road win on this six-game swing.
- Be the 966th win in program history, the second-most all-time among Division I programs.
COMING HOME
- Seven Syracuse players call the state of Maryland homeÂ
- Luke Rhoa, Riley Figueiras, Bogue Hahn, Wyatt Hottle, Brayden Ferguson, Billy Dwan III, and Jordan Beck all hail from the Old Line State.
- Saturday will be the only time during the season the Orange play in Maryland.
- The seniors in that group - Rhoa, Figueiras, Dwan, and Beck, are looking for their second win in their homestate and their first since 2023. In their previous three years, Syracuse has played in Maryland four times, picking up a neutral-site win over North Carolina in 2023 at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Olney.
- Saturday is especially home for Dwan, whose father, Bill Jr., graduated from Hopkins in 1991 and was a defenseman for some of the legendary Syracuse-Hopkins games. He was later a member of the Blue Jays coaching staff for 20 years.
- Beck and Hottle were high school teammates at nearby Calvert Hall College High School, which is located five and a half miles from Homewood Field.
